About the artist
Margo Lunsford-Chacon, born as an identical twin within a dynamic Caucasian-Hispanic American family, explores the complexities of multiracial identity. Her artistic sensibility is molded by the blanket of her undefined heritage, navigating the dualities of connection and alienation. The adversities of mental illness, trauma, and addiction in her early life have fueled her creative journey, transforming personal strife into her artistic practice.
Lunsford-Chacon honed her craft at the Glassell School of Art and Houston Baptist University's painting program, where she was profoundly influenced by her mentor, Michael Roque Collins. There, she was encouraged to dismantle her emotional defenses and infuse her art with a resonant spiritual depth. This guidance helped forge her unique artistic voice, marked by themes of fragmentation and renewal and an unflinching examination of the human condition. Her art is a powerful medium for transformation, challenging viewers to explore and resolve their internal contradictions. Inspired by artists Egon Schiele and Paul Cezanne, her pieces are more than visual representations of memory and identity; they catalyze deep self-reflection, inspiring courage, acceptance, and transcendence.
Beyond her artistic pursuits, she leads a life driven by curiosity, exploration, and a deep fascination with the human mind. With over 16 years of experience in digital design, she draws parallels between how we process information and the introspective nature of her art. Her human-centered design work explores how we navigate and interpret the world, influencing how she approaches themes of identity, memory, and perception in her creative practice. By blending technology and traditional mediums, she delves into the complexities of how we understand ourselves—bridging the analytical and emotional, the structured and the intuitive. Through this lens, she invites us to reflect on the rich layers of identity and the universal beauty of our shared human experience.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores the intricate layers of identity, memory, and transformation, delving into the inner dialogues that shape who we are. I'm drawn to themes of self-perception, longing, and the tension between who we've been and who we aspire to become. My creative process is deconstruction and reconstruction—taking fragments of thoughts, emotions, and experiences and weaving them into narratives examining the human condition's complexity.
Using materials like oil paint, pressed flowers, pearls, and resin, I aim to capture the interplay of time and emotion. For me, flowers symbolize life's fleeting beauty, while pearls reflect the slow accumulation of memory and introspection. These materials invite contemplation, encouraging viewers to embrace both the transient and enduring aspects of their experiences. My color choices are deeply intentional, exploring how hues evoke emotions and reveal vulnerability without the need for words. Light and shadow play a critical role in my work, mirroring the dynamic shifts in perception and self-awareness.
Inspired by the raw, expressive works of Egon Schiele and the structural exploration of Paul Cézanne, I'm fascinated by how we perceive ourselves. Schiele's unfiltered vulnerability and Cézanne's multiple perspectives inform my attempts to confront identity's fragmented and evolving nature. My art is a space to reflect on the beauty in decay, the resilience in transformation, and the courage it takes to face our inner truths.
Recently, my practice has expanded beyond the two-dimensional plane. I've been experimenting with resin, air-dry clay, mold-making, and textiles to bring depth and texture to my work, allowing me to explore further how materiality can deepen the narratives I create. These sculptural explorations add a tactile quality to my themes, opening up new dimensions of form and storytelling.
My creative journey is also informed by my background in digital design, where I've spent over 16 years exploring how humans process information and interact with technology. This has shaped my fascination with the human mind—how we interpret, layer, and process the stories of our lives. As technology offers new ways of seeing and connecting, my art seeks to bridge the analytical and emotional, creating spaces where viewers can reflect on their narratives.
At its core, my practice is about introspection and connection. I hope my work serves as a mirror for others, sparking an internal dialogue about vulnerability, resilience, and the stories we carry. It's an invitation to sit with the beauty of the imperfect, the transient, and the enduring—to embrace the complexity of being human.
