Where I Became the Sun is a body of work inspired by my time spent in Terlingua, Texas. It’s an environment and a moment in my life when I was searching for deeper meaning in my work as an artist and in myself as a woman.

In the desert, I learned its harsh and honest truth. The light reaches you from every direction. It exposes you. It leaves you with nowhere to hide. You feel as though the sun will take everything from you until there is nothing left. Instinctively, we search for refuge in shadow, not realizing that the shadow is what allows us to hold on, what keeps us from shrinking. And yet, to truly expand, to discover ourselves, we must step back into the light.

Expansion is painful. Pain is loss. And loss is the act of letting go.

This collection is about accepting the sun, allowing it to pull you open, to take what no longer belongs, and to leave behind something truer in its place.
